Ed.D. Program Faculty Member Shares Experience with Online Learning

Sarah Carter, PhD, joined Logan as an assistant professor in 2014 when she began teaching courses for the university’s online Doctor of Health Professions Education degree, which is now the Doctor of Education in Health Professions Education (Ed.D.) program. She worked closely with Ed.D. program director Laura Rauscher, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS, CTMH, CCATP to grow the program and the courses she was teaching. Dr. Carter teaches a variety of statistics and dissertation courses, among other online classes. She recently earned Logan’s Outstanding Faculty Award for the College of Health Sciences for her dedication to students and commitment to their success.

“In the Ed.D. program students focus on dissertation writing and bringing their topics to life, and it culminates in defending their dissertation and research to the advisory committee,” Dr. Carter said. “The caliber of students in this program is very high, and they are generally driven. It has been a rewarding experience to help them achieve their goals.”

Dr. Carter is uniquely suited to teaching online courses, as she obtained all three of her degrees online. She began by earning her bachelor’s degree in business management from SUNY Empire State College, then got a master’s degree in psychology followed by her doctorate in research design and data analytics at North Central University.

“Not only did I earn my degrees via online programs, but I have also been teaching online courses for many years, in addition to in-person courses,” Dr. Carter said. “I’ve amassed an incredible amount of experience in both teaching spaces, but I can relate to online students and am able to offer suggestions and solutions for any issues they may be facing. Time management and self-motivation are the most difficult portions of online learning, and I can sympathize with these struggles but also guide them along.”

Originally from Rochester, New York, Dr. Carter now lives near Lake George, which is close to Saratoga Springs and the famous Saratoga Racecourse. In her spare time she works with harness racing horses, trains riding horses and jumpers and teaches horseback riding lessons.

“The best part of online work and study is the ability to continue to engage in other passions in life, which makes us better teachers and students,” she said. “The flexibility also helps me meet my students’ needs. I can arrange my schedule to fit theirs, ensuring they have access to me for any questions or advice on a frequent basis, especially if they work full time.”
